European economy: the digital euro, growth and action for jobs

The digital euro and new economic choices

The European Central Bank confirms that the digital euro under discussion would be profitable and secure for all payment providers, while guaranteeing financial stability. While integrating the project into the European monetary system would cost between 2.8 and 5.4 billion euros, the transition to a free, universal electronic currency is seen by the left as a step towards greater equality of access and transparency in economic life. The condition: that the mechanism favours the general interest over that of the major financial institutions.

Growth and the labour market under pressure

GDP estimates for the 2nd quarter of 2025 show mixed growth in the eurozone and marked disparities between Member States. Weak growth, rising unemployment in some countries and pressure on purchasing power continue to fuel demands for an economic policy based on solidarity, capable of offering job guarantees and a fair redistribution of wealth. Progressive forces are calling for investment in the ecological transition, the revival of the real economy and the fight against speculation in order to anchor the European economy in principles of social justice.
